Symphony Orchestra of Tallinn Nõmme Music School (Estonia)

Symphony Orchestra of Tallinn Nõmme Music School of Tallinn has founded in 2003 by its conductor Jüri-Ruut Kangur. Before that the string orchestra has existed in this school a lot of years and it continuing still nowadays leading by conductor Peep Tõldsepp.
The symphony orchestra is high level youth orchestra with its 50 members at the age of 13 to 22 years, whose are pupils of music school. Nõmme Music School is the biggest music school in Estonia with more than 500 pupils and it is situated in Tallinn and there is taught all of classical orchestra-instruments- the strings, wood wind and brass instruments, percussions, also piano, accordeon and harp.
In repertory of orchestra has been more than 130 items, including a lot of difficult pieces and bigger works – suites, symphonies, instrumental concerts, classics, lot of film music, pop-music etc. among them Vivaldi „Four Seasons“, Festive Ouverture by Shostakovich, 9th symohony by Dvorak, „La Moldau“ by Smetana, 1st Violin Concerto by Bruch, „Carmen-suite“ by Bizet, „Aladdin-suite“ by Nielsen, „Unfinished symhony“ by Schubert, Concertino for Clarinet by Weber, Violin Concerto G-dur by Haydn, Flute Concerto G-dur, Clarinet Concerto and Piano Concerto no.23 by Mozart, symphonic poem „Finlandia“ by Sibelius etc.
The orchestra has participated in different international co-operation projects and important festivals. Concert-tours has made around Europe, to Finland, Norway, Germany, England, France, Czech Republic, Italy and Holland and in 2008 outside of Europe, to South Africa. It`s good opportunity for best instrument-students of school to get experiences for playing in an orchestra and make music together. It´s great practical training as well as orchestral education and chance to study symphonic repertory and perform it in front of the big audience in Estonia and abroad. Our orchestra has offered a chance for young students to play as soloist with orchestra. Every year has given Christmas and spring concerts, often at main events of music school. Co-operation concerts has done with friendship-orchestras from Finland, South Africa, Norway, Germany and Holland. The concerts has given also in towns of Estonia and several times in a year in Estonia Philarmonic Hall, at main and the most important concert venue in Tallinn, in the capital of Estonia.
In 2004 the orchestra participated in Southern France in the World Festival of Youth Orchestras „Orchestrades 2004“ in Brive-la-Gaillarde and the orchestra-members played in 500-members joint orchestra and our orchestra gave successful concerts, the main of them in front of the 1500-members audience at main venue, which got very warm and enjoyable standing ovations by audience.
Every year the strings of orchestra partcipating in String Orchestra Seminar of Nordic Music Schools, in 2003 they were in Karlstad in Sweden, in 2004 in Moss in Norway, in 2005 in Tallinn, in 2006 in Fredrikstad in Norway, in 2007 in Kotka in Finland, in 2008 again in Karlstad and in 2009 in Moss.
In Spring, 2005 was given the joint concert with orchestra of Lauttasaari Music School of Finland and in August was performed in Holland and in England. In Holland the huge joint concert-program has studied with local youth orchestra and that program was performed as well as own concerts by our orchestra in Leiden, Baarn, Soest and Leiderdorp. In Autumn, 2005 the string orchestra performed in Finland the entire „Four Seasons“ by Vivaldi with orchestra of Kotka Music School. In 2006 the joint program with Weimar Youth Orchestra (Germany) performed in Tallinn and in Summer the Dutch youth orchestra was hosted by our orchestra and during the week great joint program has studied and concerts was given around Estonia. In September 2006 was concert-tour to Germany, where orchestra participated in festival in Rathenow. In 2007 were participated in 10th Youth Song and Dance Celebration in Tallinn, traditional Estonian national event and played in joint orchestra, where were more than 700 players in total. In July 2007 Symphony Orchestra of Nõmme Music School was invited to participate in 9th European Festival of Youth Orchestras in Florence and surroundings in Tuscany in Italy. The orchestra was specially choosen out to attend the festival by recordings and was the first Estonian orchestra, which performed in this high-level and one of the most prestigous youth orchestras festival in Europe. Very successful concerts were given in Montecatini, Arezzo and Florence and there were standing ovationes by audience again. In the programs was lot of classical music, also film music and Estonian music, more than 2 hours music in total. After festival in Tuscany the orchestra participated in international festival of youth orchestras in Neubrandenburg in Germany. The concert with full program in 2 parts was given in Konzertkirche and was very successful. The players of orchestra played in joint orchestra of festival as well. In March 2008 concert-tour to South Africa will take place. Nõmme orchestra is the first Estonian orchestra which has ever performed in South Africa. The concerts will be given in Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Grahamstown and in Kokstad also with KwaZulu-Natal Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra and with Free State Youth Orchestra.
In 2009 the main challange for orchestra was European tour and concerts in Munich (Germany) and Prague (Czech Republic) and participating in prestigous and high level 5th Provence Festival, the important concerts were given in St.Bourg Andeol, La Garde Freinet and in Villefrance sur Mer close to Nice and the main concert was given in front of 2000 people at world-famous and one of the oldest festivals in Europe, 60th Menton Festival, where our orchestra performed besides this kind of famous artists like Barbara Hendricks, Sergei Nakariakov, Yuri Bashmet, Vadim Repin etc. at the festival in 2009. The concert-tour was very successful with standing ovations.
The Symphony Orchestra of Nõmme Music School is one of the best youth orchestras in Estonia and has achieved outstanding and high international level and is invited to big and prestigous international festivals. 12 members of orchestra are also players of Estonian National Youth Symphony Orchestra (ENYSO) and this concert tour also some players of ENYSO are playing with us.
The concert tours are finacially suported by state and municipality: by Estonian Cultural Ministry, Estonian Cultural Capital (Fund), Ministry of Education and Science of Estonia, Educational Department of Tallinn City Government, Department of Cultural Heritage of Tallinn City Government, Nõmme District Government. In that tour participating 45 players.
Jüri-Ruut Kangur was born in 1975. In 1998 he finished Estonian Academy of Music, studying orchestral and choral conducting and composition. He has conducted several choirs and orchestras in Estonia, 1994-1999 he was music director and conductor of Haapsalu Youth Music Theatre, 1996-2004 principal conductor of Haapsalu Town Orchestra, 2000-2002 conductor of Boys Choir of Estonian National Opera, 2001-2003 chairman of conducting department in G.Ots Music School of Tallinn and conductor of symphony orchestra of that school. Since 1995 he is principal conductor of Estonian National Youth Symphony Orchestra and since 2003 Chamber Orchestra of Nõmme Music School of Tallinn. He has conducted best orchestras and choirs in Estonia (Pärnu Town Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Estonian National Male Choir, Symphony Orchestra of Estonian Academy of Music) and co-operation projects of international youth orchestras in Finland, Norway, Germany and Holland. In 2005 he gave masterclasses of conducting in Republic of South Africa and conducted his own works with local choirs being international clinican at McLachlan Choral Workshop in Michaelhouse. In 2007 he was chief (general) conductor and artistic leader of youth orchestras at 10th Estonian Youth Song Celebration, conducting joint orchestra with more than 700 players.
He has composed vocal-symphonical big works „Requiem“, „Magnificat“, oratorium „Story of Estonian Singer“, humoratorium „Salomon Vesipruul“, musicals „Sending of Joonas“ and „Clowns at Class-excursion“, lot of orchestral works and choral pieces. Some of them has performed in USA, Canada, South Africa and lot of countries in Europe (Italy, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Hungary, Holland, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece and others).
This year him was given the Year Prize of Music of 2007 by Estonian Cultural Capital (Endowment) and Price of Riho Päts School Music Foundation in 2009. Since 2007 he is member of European Association of Youth Orchestras and since 2009 board member of European Orchestras Federation.
