Greek Theatre
Construction of the Greek Theatre at La Mortella took three years
of expert landscaping, adapting a natural bowl formation in the rocky
slopes of Monte Pizzi on which the gardens are situated. This natural
incline dominates the Bay of Forio, commanding a breathtaking view over
the sea.The tiers of seating are set between great lava boulders and bare stone walls, enhancing the natural landscape and the patient work of the men who shaped it, so as to create an enchanting setting. The “cavea” is immersed in the lush vegetation of the garden, surrounded by trees, Mediterranean plants and fragrant herbs that pervade the air with their perfume, at the same time keeping the insects at bay. To enhance the spirit of the place, reinterpreting the Mediterranean landscape in a spectacular and unusual way, graceful China roses have been planted along the terraces of the Theatre together with aromatic Mediterranean plants and fragrant night-flowering vines, creating a theatre-garden filled with perfumes. The tiers are covered with many varieties of creeping thyme that release delicious fragrances. Great care was taken over these naturalistic aspects because the area had to become an integral part of the garden, enhancing the beauty of its landscape and Mediterranean vegetation, whilst, at the same time, permitting the staging of the finest of musical performances. A pre-existing building at the foot of the slope serves as the stage; inside it there are dressing rooms and storage. A sophisticated system of illumination creates subtle lighting effects, enhancing the garden’s magical atmosphere. The stage can host an entire symphony orchestra (up to 100 members) whilst the theatre can accommodate an audience of up to 350, with access for wheelchairs. |
