In April the valley is filled with the blooming of the Geranium maderense, from the island of Madeira, an enchanting plant with pink-purple clusters of flowers.

These perennials have no real trunk, and are held up by the stems of the lower leaves which curve downward, supporting the plant like flying buttresses.

This generous geranium spreads its seeds all over the garden, and its leaves are elegant and beautiful to look at most of the year.
