Giardini La Mortella

In 1956 Lady Walton asked the famous landscape architect Russell Page to provide a design for the layout of the garden that would include the dramatic volcanic rocks. Music activities

During the year there are three different concert seasons: in Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall; in Summer the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphonic concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre.

The upper garden was designed and developed by Lady Walton beginning in 1983, the year Sir William Walton passed away.

Where the lower garden is enveloping, intimate, humid, and luxurious, the upper garden is sunny, open (with many wonderful views of the surrounding area), and generally cultivated with Mediterranean vegetation.

The upper garden is punctuated by surprising architectural elements, many of which are imbued with symbolic significance and make references to the history and archeology of the island of Ischia.

There are two ways to reach the upper garden. The first is to climb one of the many sets of steps that wend their way up the hillside. The second is by driving through the woods to the parking area near the olive grove at the upper entrance to the garden.
