Giardini La Mortella

In 1956 Lady Walton asked the famous landscape architect Russell Page to provide a design for the layout of the garden that would include the dramatic volcanic rocks. The design of the garden was conceived with refinement and ability, taking advantage of the suggestive natural landscape with its openings towards the Mediterranean Sea.

Music activities

During the year there are three different concert seasons: in Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall; in Summer the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphonic concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre.

Further up the hill behind the tea room, in a curve in the rock, stands a Spathodea campanulata, a tropical tree from Africa which in late summer produces clusters of bright red goblet-shaped flowers with a yellow edge on the petals. The individual flowers do not last very long, but each wave of flowers in the cluster is quickly replaced by a new wave.
At our latitude, this tree normally only survives in greenhouses, but, in our garden it was carefully placed against the side of the mountain so that in the winter months the rock absorbs the sun’s heat and keeps it warm.
