History of Gardens
La Mortella Gardens were created in 1958 by Lady Susana Walton , the wife of Argentine origin of the English composer Sir William Walton . Today La Mortella belongs to Fondazione William Walton La Mortella, that manages the garden, opens it to the public, takes care of the administration , and is in charge of cultural activities.
Susana Walton
Was born in Argentina and received the type of education held to be appropriate for a girl of her social class. She learned to speak English before Spanish, her native tongue, and it was expected that she would become engaged and, after a suitable number of months, marry a young Argentinian of an equal status.
Sir William Walton
Is considered as one of the greatest English composers of the twentieth century. A determining factor in the development of his career was the patronage of the eccentric Sitwell family (the siblings Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell) who took him under their wing in 1919 when he left Oxford.

Music activities
During the year there are three different concert seasons: in Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall; in Summer the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphonic concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre.

Ivan Moshchuk - Pianoforte
Protagonista dei prossimi concerti del weekend pasquale 8-9 aprile alla Mortella sarà il pianista ucraino-statunitense Ivan Moshchuk.
Questo giovane musicista ha iniziato gli studi pianistici negli Stati Uniti e in Canada studiando con grandi pianisti quali Leon Fleisher; si è poi trasferito in Europa, a Roma per studiare presso la prestigiosa Accademia di Santa Cecilia con Benedetto Lupo e attualmente si sta perfezionando a Londra presso la Royal Academy of Music.
Dopo le prime affermazioni in America, dove ha vinto numerosi importanti premi per giovani pianisti (Arthur Fraser Competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, Gilmore Young Artist Award, Rosamond P. Haeberle Memorial Piano Award, etc.). Ivan ha iniziato con grande successo una carriera concertistica internazionale sia come solista che come camerista, esibendosi nelle maggiori città europee, nel Nord America e in Asia, in sale e istituzioni prestigiose come Concertgebouw di Amsterdam, Philharmonia di Bratislava, Chamber Music Society a Detroit.
Alla Mortella presenterà 2 programmi completamente diversi, nei quali affronterà composizioni di grande difficoltà tecnica ed espressiva. Nel concerto di sabato Ivan renderà omaggio a Rachmaninoff nel 150° anniversario dalla nascita del grande musicista russo con l'esecuzione delle Variazioni su un Tema di Corelli, basate sul celeberrimo tema "della Follia": scritte nel 1931 e molto amate dai pianisti e dal pubblico, le 20 variazioni di cui si compone questo lavoro dispiegano una vasta gamma di emozioni, lirismo, vigore, introspezione e virtuosismo pianistico.
