The concert season dedicated to new generations of musicians continues at the Giardini La Mortella in Ischia with an event celebrating the role of school as a place of artistic education, personal growth, and cultural sharing. On Thursday, July 23, the Teatro Greco will host the Symphony Orchestra of Milan's Liceo Musicale "Carlo Tenca," conducted by Marco Bossi, one of the most exciting ensembles in the Italian music education scene.
The experience of the Symphony Orchestra of Milan's Liceo Musicale "Carlo Tenca" represents a significant example of how public schools can transform into authentic laboratories of artistic excellence, capable of combining education, creativity, and participation. Milan's Liceo Statale Carlo Tenca, an institution with over a century of history and home to one of Italy's most important music high schools since 2010, engages approximately two hundred students in the study of music alongside their high school education.
Founded in 2021 out of a desire to rediscover the pleasure of making music together after the pandemic, the Symphony Orchestra now brings together approximately seventy young musicians from all classes and with varying levels of preparation. The project was born primarily as an educational workshop: a year-long program in which students grow as musicians and as people, accompanied by a team of teachers who develop a learning path that is attentive to the characteristics and potential of each individual.
The unique diversity of the ensemble requires constant adaptation and arrangement, aimed at enhancing the unique timbres of each instrument and making the participation of all the musicians meaningful. The results achieved testify to the value of the journey undertaken: the orchestra won First Prize and the Best Orchestra award at the XII International "Città di Palmanova" Competition – UNESCO Prize 2024, in addition to other awards at the National "Schools in Music" Competition in Verona.
The program chosen for the concert at La Mortella will take the audience on a journey through cinema, literature, and the imagination. Opening the program will be "H.O.L.S.T. – Harmony of Light, Space, and Time," a lyrical-symphonic suite inspired by three key moments in Gustav Holst's oeuvre: Beni Mora, the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, and the celebrated orchestral cycle The Planets. Through a blend of oriental, spiritual, and cosmic influences, the piece introduces the audience to the English composer's sonic universe, evoking his interest in cultures, myths, and dimensions of the human imagination and the infinite. The journey will then continue with some famous pieces created for cinema, from the epic atmospheres of El Cid and Lawrence of Arabia to the adventures of Indiana Jones.
The orchestra will be conducted by Marco Bossi, a teacher at the "Carlo Tenca" High School of Music and the author of numerous arrangements performed by the ensemble. A graduate in Conducting, he has explored the operatic and symphonic repertoire through international masterclasses and collaborations with leading musical institutions, including the JuniOrchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Athens Philharmonia, the European Music Academy, and the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.
The presence of the Carlo Tenca High School Symphony Orchestra at the Giardini La Mortella is fully in line with the mission of the William Walton and La Mortella Foundation: to offer young musicians a prestigious stage and to support music as a means of encounter, education, and building the future.
