The chamber music concerts at the Giardini La Mortella continue with great success, and a young pianist, Gabriel Meloni, will once again perform the concerts next weekend, May 2-3.
Born in Austria in 2001, Gabriel Meloni has performed since childhood with various ensembles in prestigious venues, such as the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, the Bregenzer Festspiele, and the ORF. He also participated in this year's 2026 New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic, filmed in the concert. After studying with O. Schnyder, K. Scherbakov, and J. Jiracek von Arnim, he is currently pursuing advanced studies in Rome with B. Lupo at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and in chamber music with S. Mendl at the Vienna University of Music. He is the winner of numerous competitions, including second prize at the Rotary Piano Prize in Lindau, third prize at the Jenö Takacs International Competition in Burgenland, and the Nuova Coppa Pianisti in Osimo. In 2025, he won the Sylff Scholarship from the Tokyo Foundation and was selected to join the Orpheum Foundation in Zurich. Very active as a chamber musician, he has won first prizes and special prizes at international and national competitions, including the Luigi Nono Competition in Turin. He has recorded CDs as a duo and soloist.
Gabriel has performed with orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra Innstrumenti, the Junge Philharmonie Wien, the Chamber Orchestra Knittelfeld, and the Collegium Innstumentale Dornbirn, and has given recitals at the Vienna Konzerthaus, for the "Due Mondi" Festival in Spoleto, the Swiss Chamber Music Festival, the Cristofori Festival in Padua, and the Klevischen Musiksommer.
Gabriel Meloni's program at La Mortella is highly interesting and refined, alternating compositions from the great piano repertoire with rarely performed works. In particular, we will hear Beethoven's first piano sonata, Op. 2 No. 1. In the three sonatas of Op. 2, published in 1796 and dedicated to Haydn, the young Beethoven expanded the sonata form, extending it for the first time to four movements. They feature passages of authentic Beethovenian power and sudden harmonic and dynamic effects, along with structural originality and a new vision of form.
