It is near Forio, a village in the Island Ischia, in the bay of Naples. Designed by landscape architect Russell Page, La Mortella is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful private gardens of Italy.

Musical season

In Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall.

In Summer (June and July) it's scheduled the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphony concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre.

In 1956 Lady Walton asked the famous landscape architect Russell Page to provide a design for the layout of the garden that would include the dramatic volcanic rocks. The design of the garden was conceived with refinement and ability, taking advantage of the suggestive natural landscape with its openings towards the Mediterranean Sea.

History of Gardens

La Mortella Gardens were created in 1958 by Lady Susana Walton , the wife of Argentine origin of the English composer Sir William Walton . Today La Mortella belongs to Fondazione William Walton La Mortella, that manages the garden, opens it to the public, takes care of the administration , and is in charge of cultural activities.

Susana Walton

Was born in Argentina and received the type of education held to be appropriate for a girl of her social class. She learned to speak English before Spanish, her native tongue, and it was expected that she would become engaged and, after a suitable number of months, marry a young Argentinian of an equal status.

Sir William Walton

Is considered as one of the greatest English composers of the twentieth century. A determining factor in the development of his career was the patronage of the eccentric Sitwell family (the siblings Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell) who took him under their wing in 1919 when he left Oxford.
