The concerts taking place next weekend, October 10–11, at the La Mortella Gardens will feature an unusual and rare chamber music duo comprising double bassist Levi Andreassen and pianist Thomas Luke.
American double bassist and chamber musician Levi Andreassen (born in 2004) is the winner of numerous international competitions—including first prize at the Haslemere International String Competition (2025), the International Society of Bassists Youth Solo Competition (2023), the London Classical Music Competition, the Caneres International Competition, and the Charles R. Hall Competition—and has also been awarded a scholarship for the Keshet Eilon Mastercourse. He has performed with the London Mozart Players and the Young Musicians String Orchestra of Turin at venues such as Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, as well as at festivals and concert series including the Petworth Music Festival, Beaminster Music Festival, Concerts at Cratfield, Kirker Music Festivals, the Kensington & Chelsea Music Society, the Temple Music Foundation (at the Inner Parliament Chamber), and the Stadtpalais Liechtenstein in Vienna. Levi collaborates with prominent chamber ensembles across the UK and Europe and has appeared in broadcasts for BBC Radio 3.
Thomas Luke, a 22-year-old native of the Isle of Wight (England), began his piano studies with J. Harvey before continuing under E. Hodgkinson at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. He is currently a scholarship holder, supported by the H.R. Taylor Charitable Trust (at the Royal College of Music) and the Drake Calleja Trust. He won the BBC Young Musician competition in 2020; his performances have been broadcast on national radio and television and have taken him to stages around the world, including London’s Wigmore Hall, the Weißes Haus in Leipzig, the Xiamen International Conference Center Concert Hall, and the Van Cliburn Concert Hall in Fort Worth. He recently received the Prix Monti at the Piano Campus International Competition and won an award at the Vienna International Music Competition. He participated in the prestigious PianoTexas International Festival and, in 2024, launched “Many Pianos”, a series of arrangements for multiple pianos blending digital and acoustic elements. In 2026, he made his debut with an album of original compositions, “See Me Now”.
Levi and Thomas present a program to the audience at La Mortella that highlights the double bass's soloistic and timbral potential, ranging from the 19th-century virtuosity of Giovanni Bottesini to 20th-century and contemporary repertoire.
