History of Gardens
La Mortella Gardens were created in 1958 by Lady Susana Walton , the wife of Argentine origin of the English composer Sir William Walton . Today La Mortella belongs to Fondazione William Walton La Mortella, that manages the garden, opens it to the public, takes care of the administration , and is in charge of cultural activities.
Susana Walton
Was born in Argentina and received the type of education held to be appropriate for a girl of her social class. She learned to speak English before Spanish, her native tongue, and it was expected that she would become engaged and, after a suitable number of months, marry a young Argentinian of an equal status.
Sir William Walton
Is considered as one of the greatest English composers of the twentieth century. A determining factor in the development of his career was the patronage of the eccentric Sitwell family (the siblings Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell) who took him under their wing in 1919 when he left Oxford.

Music activities
During the year there are three different concert seasons: in Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall; in Summer the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphonic concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre.

Concerti ad ingresso libero in memoria di William Walton nel 40mo anniversario della scomparsa.
In occasione della riapertura dei Giardini La Mortella per la stagione 2023, la Fondazione William Walton ha il piacere di informare i visitatori che i concerti di sabato 1 e domenica 2 aprile alle 17:00 saranno ad INGRESSO LIBERO, previa prenotazione, fino ad esaurimento dei posti.
I concerti inaugurali sono affidati alla pianista Marie Rosa Guenter, che terrà da solista entrambi i concerti, in sostituzione del violoncellista Leonid Gorokhov impossibilitato ad intervenire
